Baseball Opens CCC Play Against Gordon

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team opened Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday. The Leopards fell to Gordon, 9-1, in the first game and were edged by the Fighting Scots, 2-1, in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A leadoff single and a walk placed runner on first and second to open the game. Senior Patrick Tevenan (Weymouth, Mass.) laid a bunt down and an error caused all three runners to be safe. Junior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) got the next two batters to ground back to him, forcing the runner on third out at home, however, sophomore Dalton Cody (Barre, Vt.) cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it 4-0.
  • The Fighting Scots added a run in the third when junior Andrew Hartman (Bethel, Conn.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. An inning later, the visitors added four to their total as junior Shane Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drew a bases-loaded walk, Tevenan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, freshman CJ Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) singled home a run, and Hartman plated a run with a sacrifice fly.
  • Wentworth got its run in the bottom of the sixth inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from sophomore Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.). Senior Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.) led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Graduate student Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) walked, and with one out, senior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) singled to load the bases before Peruzzi brought in Masciadrelli. A fly out ended the inning, leaving two runners on.
  • Sullivan suffered his first loss of the season (4-1), allowing nine runs (five earned) on five hits. Freshman Matt Silvia (Fall River, Mass.) and senior Jacon Knowles (Concord, N.H.) combined to give the Black & Gold 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. At the pate, O'Neill and classmate Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) each had a pair of hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophomore Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) gave up a leadoff single but proceeded to put out the next 10 Gordon batters, including six by way of a strikeout. Wentworth threatened in the bottom of the third with French hitting a two-out single and Freeman following being hit by a pitch. However, a groundout ended the threat.
  • The Fighting Scots broke the ice in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs, thanks to an RBI double from Shane Demers and an RBI single from Tevenan.
  • Wentworth answered in the bottom of the inning with a run. French drew a walk to lead off the inning and went to second on a Freeman single. With one out, Peruzzi reached on a fielder's choice and went to second on an error. On the error, French scored.
  • The Leopards had the lead runner on in the bottom of the ninth, however, a pickoff left the bases empty and a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
  • Farinas suffered the loss (2-2), allowing two runs on five hits and striking out a career-high 12 batters. Five Leopards had a hit whith Peruzzi driving in a run.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 63rd and 64th all-time meetings between the two teams. Wentworth leads 36-28.
