Salve Takes Two from Baseball

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University baseball team swept a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference baseball games over Wentworth, Institute of Technology. The Seahawks took game one, 11-1, and won, 9-2, in the nightcap.

Salve Regina 11, Wentworth 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Salve Regina took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning as sophomore Michael Breen (Auburn, Mass.) led off with a walk and scored on an RBI single from graduate student Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.). Ketch, who advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when junior Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) stole second. The Seahawks loaded the bases with two outs, however, junior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) got a strikeout to end the inning.
  • The Seahawks scored one in the third when sophomore Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) grounded out to score sophomore Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) and added a run in the fourth when Petrosino drew a based-loaded walk. The hosts scored four times in the sixth inning to take an 8-0 lead, with Petrosino recording an RBI double and Grover hitting a three-run home run.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the seventh inning. With one out, sophomore Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) tripled and, after a strikeout, senior Justin Kirst (Boston, N.Y.) drove Peruzzi in with a single. The run was the first earned run given up by junior Dominic Perachi (Washington Depot, Conn.) this season.
  • Junior Chris Veneruso (Westport, Conn.) homered in the seventh to make it 10-1 and a sacrifice fly from Ketch in the eighth rounded out the scoring.
  • Sullivan took the loss (4-2), allowing four runs on two hits with seven walks and four strikeouts. Five student-athletes each recorded a hit, which included Peruzzi's triple and Kirst's RBI single.

Salve Regina 9, Wentworth 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Scoring twice in the first inning, the Seahawks took a 2-0 lead as junior Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) doubled in Ketch and he came around to score on an RBI single from Petrosino.
  • The game remined 2-0 until the sixth inning when Salve Regina scored five runs. Breen hit a two-run single and senior Jared Beniers (Abington, Mass.), Petrosino, and Cannoe each drove in runs. An inning later, Ketch drove in pair to make it 9-0.
  • Wentworth broke through in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) led off with a single and, after a pair of outs were recorded, senior Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.) doubled him home. Masciadrelli advanced to third on a wild pitch, however, he was stranded there after a strikeout.
  • The Leopards made it a 9-2 game in the ninth. With one out, freshman Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and went to second when senior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) singled. Peruzzi reached on an error to load the bases and Petit singled in Presico. However, a strikeout a pop out left the bases loaded.
  • Sophomore Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) took the loss (2-3), allowing seven runs on 10 hits and striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Petit and Masciadrelli each had two hits and drove in a run.
