Fast Start Pushes Nichols Past Baseball

DUDLEY, Mass. – Graduate student Nathaniel Cormier (Sandisfield, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as the Nichols College baseball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 12-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

With the win the Bison improve to 10-11-1 overall and 3-4-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 11-8 (1-5).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nichols struck for six tuns in the bottom of the first inning as Cormier hit a home run, junior Brad Ellis (Morris, Conn.) drove in a pair with a single, and sophomore Brennan Hyde (Tampa, Fla.) and sophomore Andrew Croteau (North Reading, Mass.) each had RBI singles. In his second trip to the plate in the inning, Cormier drove in a run to make it 6-0.
  • The Bison added a pair in the third inning. Croteau led off getting hit by a pitch and came around to score on a freshman William Nath (The Woodlands, Texas) single. Nath went to second on an error and scored on Cormier's RBI single with two outs.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the fifth inning on a senior Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) home run. With two outs, senior Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.) drew a walk and came home on McManus' first home run of the season.
  • Nichols scored three in the sixth inning to make it 11-2 as Ellis had an RBI single, Nath drew a bases-loaded walk, and Cormier drew a bases-loaded walk. Hyde led off the seventh inning with a home run to round out the scoring.
  • Junior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss, lasting just a third on an inning and allowing six runs on six hits. Senior Jacob Knowles (Concord, N.H) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed a pair of unearned runs while striking out two. Sophomore Jeff Rodden (Plymouth, Mass.) threw 2.1 innings, allowing three runs, and freshman Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run and striking out a pair.
  • In addition to McManus driving in two runs, seniors Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) and Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) each recorded two hits.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 51st all-time meeting between the two teams with Nichols holding a 27-24 series advantage.
