Baseball, Curry Pick up Saturday Split

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – In Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon, Wentworth Institute of Technology and Curry College split a doubleheader. The host Leopards took the first game, 13-6, while the Colonels were a 6-4 winner in the nightcap.

Wentworth 13, Curry 6

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Curry took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to an RBI single from graduate student Garrett Fosher (Exeter, N.H.) and a bases-loaded walk from senior Jason Leonard (Dedham, Mass.). However, sophomore Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) induced a groundout to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. Wentworth answered in the bottom of the second with three runs. Sophomore Michael Petit (Sandwich, mass.) led off the inning with a home run to make it 2-1, while graduate student Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) drove in sophomore Matt Rice (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and senior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.).
  • The Leopards added a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from senior Justin Kirst (Boston, N.Y.) to make it 4-1 and used a four-run fourth inning to up their lead to 8-2. French drew a bases-loaded walk, O'Neill hit a sacrifice fly, Freeman scored when French stole second, and sophomore Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) had an RBI single.
  • Wentworth scored twice in the fifth on a two-run single from Freeman, making it 10-2. Curry got a pair back in the top of the sixth on a junior Brandon Prescod (Brooklyn, N.Y.) two-home run but Wentworth made it 11-4 in the bottom of the inning when Peruzzi scored on a passed ball.
  • Sophomore Joan Peralta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a one-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh to pull the Colonels to within 11-6, however, in the bottom of the inning, The Black & Gold responded with two of their own as O'Neill grounded out to score senior Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) and Peruzzi had an RBI single.
  • Farinas improved to 3-3 on the season as he allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out eight in seven innings. Junior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three. At the plate, Peruzzi was 4-for-5 with two RBI, senior Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.) was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Freeman and McManus had two hits each.

Curry 6, Wentworth 4

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Curry used a pair of Wentworth errors to have runners on first and second with no one out to open the second inning. Peralta grounded out to advance each runner and senior Julian Jaume (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove both home with a single. The bottom of the inning saw Wentworth cut the lead in half when Masciadrelli drove in Kirst with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Colonels added a run in the top of the fifth when Heggs doubled in Jaume to take a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, the Black & Gold evened the score at 3-all, thanks to a ground out from Peruzzi and an RBI single from Petit.
  • Curry broke the tie in the top of the seventh, scoring three times as Heggs delivered a two-run single and graduate student Jared Keller (Oxford, Conn.) drove in a run with a single.
  • Down to their final chance, Wentworth got a two-out double from Kirst, which was followed by an RBI single from sophomore Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.). However, the potential tying run grounded out to end the game.
  • Junior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss (3-2), allowing six runs (four earned) on five hits and striking out six in 6.1 innings. Sullivan and senior Jacob Knowles (Concord, N.H.) combined to hold Curry scoreless in 2.2 innings, striking out a combined three and allowing just one hit. At the plate, French was 2-for-3.
