Baseball Clipped by Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. –  Scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy baseball team erased a 5-4 deficit and held on for a 7-6 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology. The game was called after seven innings due to strong wind gusts that hampered play.

With the win the Buccaneers improve to16-11 while the Leopards fall to 12-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth struck first, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Senior Kyle Desjardins (North Granby, Conn.) led off the game with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. With one out, sophomore Michael Petit (Sandwich, mass.) doubled him home and came around to score on a sophomore Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) single. The Leopards added a run in the top of the second, making it 3-0 as Petit drove in senior Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.), who was hit by a pitch with one out.
  • Mass. Maritime scored twice in the second inning, all coming with two outs. Sophomore Brett Velzis (Cypress, Texas) led off with a triple and with two outs he scored when freshman Evan Vieira (Hull, Mass.) reached on an error. Junior Chris Perito (East Falmouth, Mass.) drew a bases-loaded walk to score freshman Hunter Dean (Plymouth, Mass.). An inning later the Buccaneers took a 4-3 lead, as senior Zach Sylvia (Brockton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and came around to score when freshman Colin Landry (Norton, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice which resulted in an error and Dean had a groundout RBI.
  • The Leopards reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning, thanks to a two-run double from senior Justin Kirst (Boston, N.Y.). With two outs, Peruzzi singled and went to second on a senior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) single. Kirst followed with his two-run double and went to third on a wild pitch, however, a groundout left him there.
  • The hosts got an RBI single from Perito and a two-run double from freshman Michael Estrada (Covington, La.) to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Peruzzi led off with a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. O'Neill doubled him home to make it 7-6. Kirst sacrificed O'Neill to third, however, two outs left the tying run on third.
  • Sophomore Jeff Rodden (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss (0-1) allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and striking out three in three innings. Freshman Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) got the start, allowing four unearned runs on one hit and striking out four. At the plate, Petit was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Peruzzi and O'Neill each had two hits.
