Bridgewater State Takes Non-Conference Matchup over Baseball

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Scoring eight times in the fourth through seventh innings, the Bridgewater State University baseball team (18-9) snapped a 1-all tie and defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (12-11), 9-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bridgewater State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Eric Longley (Mansfield, Mass.) led off with a double and was brought home on a junior Sam Goudy (Weymouth, Mass.) single.
  • Wentworth countered with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-all. Sophomore Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second when classmate Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) sacrificed him over. Senior Kyle Desjardins (North Granby, Conn.) scored Petit with a single.
  • The Bears took a 4-1 lead with a three-run fourth inning, all coming on a home run from senior Jonathan O'Donnell (Hull, Mass.). An inning later the hosts plated a run when sophomore Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) had an RBI single, making it 5-1.
  • Bridgewater State scored three in the sixth with O'Donnell hitting a single and sophomore Kyle Suraci (Clinton, Conn.) scoring as a result of an error, Goudey delivering an RBI double, and Wladkowski drawing a bases-loaded walk. Longley had an RBI double in the seventh to make it 9-1.
  • Freshman matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on five hits and striking out three in four innings. Classmate Matt Silvia (Fall River, Mass.) allowed four runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Clayton Harper (Somerset, Mass.) itched two-third of an inning, recording a pair of strikeouts. Senior Jacob Knowles (Concord, N.H.) allowed a run on three hits with one strikeout in an inning of work while graduate student Zach Gagnon (Pomfret Center, Conn.) pitched a perfect eighth with a strikeout.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 13th all-time meeting between the two teams. Bridgewater State leads, 12-1.
