Baseball Battles League-Leading Endicott

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team battled regionally ranked and league-leading Endicott on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. The Gulls picked up the sweep, winning 9-2 and 8-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth nearly took the lead in the first inning as, with one out, senior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Freshman Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) hit a single, however, O'Neill was out trying to score. The Leopards took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as senior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) hit his second home run of the season.
  • Endicott took the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth, with four coming on a grand slam from junior Jake Nardone (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Nicolas Notrangelo (Taunton, Mass.) driving in a run with a single.
  • The Leopards closed the gap to 5-2 on a graduate student Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) home run – his second of the season – in the bottom of the fifth. The Gulls added two in the eighth and two in the ninth, with three of those runs coming on home runs.
  • Senior Jacob Knowles (Concord, N.H.) made his start of the season, allowing five runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work. Junior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four runs and striking out two. In addition to Freeman and French recording hits, Peruzzi also had a base hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Kyle Desjardins (North Granby, Conn.) led off getting hot by a pitch but was out on a fielder's choice by Freeman. O'Neill singled and went to second when Freeman moved up to third. Peruzzi followed with a ground ball in the infield where O'Neill was safe at third and Freeman scored.
  • Endicott tied the game at 1-all in the fourth when sophomore Kyle Grabowski (Westfield, Mass.) scored on a double play. The Gulls took a 2-1 lead an inning later on an RBI single from Notrangelo.
  • Using a six-run eighth inning, Endicott broke the game open. Sophomore John Mulready (Peabody, Mass.) hit a solo home run, junior Caleb Shupr (East Caanan, Conn.) hit a three-run home run, Notrangelo followed with a home run, and Garbowski scored on a sacrifice fly.
  • Junior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss (3-4) allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and striking out three in seven innings of work. At the plate Peruzzi and O'Neill each had a hit while French reached base twice via a walk and a hit by pitch.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 55th and 56th all-time series meetings between the two teams. Endicott leads, 47-9.
