SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Using an eight-run second inning, the Western New England baseball team jumped out to an early lead and defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 17-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday afternoon..

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth nearly scored in the top of the first inning as senior Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, Mass.) drew a one-out walk and, with two outs, graduate student Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) singled which moved Lundgren to third. However, both runners were stranded after a lineout ended the inning.
  • Western New England sent 13 batters to the plate in the second inning and capitalized on a pair of Leopard errors to put eight runs on the board.
  • The Black & Gold scored a run in the third inning. Freshman Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) led off with a single and went to third when Lundgren singled.  With one out, McManus reached on a fielder's choice, which plated Sibert.
  • In the fourth inning, a two-run home run put the hosts ahead, 10-0.
  • Wentworth scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Sibert reached on an error and went to second when Lundgren singled. Junior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) singled in Sibert and moved Lundgren to third. McManus lifted a sacrifice fly to score Lundgren.
  • The bottom of the fifth inning saw Western New England score three runs and the Goden Bears added four in the home half of the sixth.
  • Lundgren finished 2-for-3 with a walk, while McManus drove in two runs. Senior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) suffered the loss (0-5).
