Peruzzi, Campbell Lead Baseball in Split Against Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Senior Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) matched a career-high with nine strikeouts and junior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with five RBI as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team picked up its first Commonwealth Coast Conference win of the season with a 20-1 win over Gordon in the opening game of a CCC doubleheader on Saturday. The host Fighting Scots picked up the split with an 11-1 win in the nightcap.


GAME ONE:  Wentworth 20, Gordon 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first two innings, Wentworth got all the runs it would need in the third frame, scoring five times. Sophomore Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) brew a one-out walk and went to second on a freshman Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) single. Freshman Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) reached on an error which allowed Prisco to score and moved Sibert to second. Peruzzi followed with his second home run of the season, making it 4-0. With two outs, senior Chris Alcantara (Weymouth, Mass.) reached on an error, which plated graduate student Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.), who had been hit by a pitch and stole second.
  • Prisco led off the fourth inning with a single and, with two outs, Peruzzi singled to move him to second. McManus singled, which loaded the bases, however, Prisco wound up scoring on an error, increasing the lead to 6-0.
  • The Leopards exploded for six runs in the sixth inning, breaking the game open. Peruzzi had an RBI single, junior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) delivered an RBI single, freshman Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) drove in a run when he reached on an error, Favazzo drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run, Prisco drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Alcantara scored a wild pitch, Cullinan hit a two-run double, and Peruzzi had an RBI double.
  • Robinson led off the seventh getting hit by a pitch. He scored when Favazzo tripled and Favazzo scored on a Robinson single. McManus drew a bases-loaded walk, and DiPina followed getting hit by a pitch to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
  • Campbell improves to 1-4 on the season allowing one run on four hits in addition to matching his career high in strikeouts. Peruzzi reached base five times with four hits and a walk. Sibert was 4-for-5 with a walk. Favazzo and Cullinan each had two hits and drove in two runs.


GAME TWO:  Gordon 11, Wentworth 1


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Fighting Scots jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning when senior Shane Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) hit a two-run single. Gordon added four runs in the second as sophomore CJ Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) hit a two-run home run and a pair of RBI singles accounted for the scoring. An inning later, a Wentworth error led to Gordon's seventh run of the game.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the fourth inning, as with two out, Peruzzi walked and McManus was hit by a pitch. DiPina followed with a double to drive in Peruzzi.
  • Gordon added a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Shane Demers and scored three times in the sixth to round out the scoring.
  • Junior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) took the loss (0-3). Junior Clayton Harper (Somerset, Mass.) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit in three innings. At the plate, DiPina had both of Wentworth's hits.


ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 65th and 66th all-time meetings between the two teams.
