Baseball Sets Record in Game Two Win over North Central

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team set a program record with X runs as the Leopards picked up a 25-11, game two win over North Central (Minn.). The Leopards picked up the split after falling, 13-8, in the first game.

Wentworth's 25 runs eclipsed the mark of 24, set in a 24-6 win against Anna Maria on April 24, 1997.


GAME ONE:  North Central (Minn.) 13, Wentworth 7

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophomore Matt McDuff (Riverside, R.I.) hit a one-out single and stole second before being driven in on a senior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) single to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. North Central countered with a solo home run in the top of the second to even the score at 1-all.
  • With the score tied at 1-all heading into the fourth inning, the Rams sent 17 batters to the plate, scoring 11 times to take a 12-1 lead and added a single run in the top of the fifth to up their lead to 13-1.
  • The Leopards scored six times in the bottom of the inning, closing the gap to 13-7. Senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) had a two-run double, DiPina had an RBI single, senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) had an RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) had an RBI single.
  • DiPina finished the game going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Lapierre was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Petit and sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) each had a pair of hits.
  • Freshman Brandon Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) allowed just one run on three hits over the final three innings of work.


GAME TWO:  Wentworth 25, North Central (Minn.) 11


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth erupted for 12 runs in the top of the first inning with DiPina and sophomore Matt Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) each being hit by pitch with the bases loaded and Prisco drawing a bases-loaded walk. Graduate student Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.) hit a two-run double, sophomore Mike Sibert (Lexington, Mass.) drove in a pair, Lapierre had an RBI single, Peruzzi had a two-run triple, and DiPina drove in his second run of the inning with an RBI groundout.
  • After North Central got on the board in the bottom of the first, Wentworth made it 13-1 when Peruzzi drove in a run.
  • The Rams scored twice in the bottom of the third to make it 13-3, however, a seven-run fourth inning broke the game open for the Black & Gold. In the inning, Favazzo, senior Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.), Lundgren, and senior Griffin Cournan (Pembroke, Mass.) each drove in runs.
  • Wentworth added five in the fifth inning to break the program record for runs in a single game. Robinson had an RBI double, while freshman John Golebieski (Seymour, Conn.) and classmate Bennett Leary (Alamo, Calif.) each drove in a run. North Central scored five in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring.
  • Lapierre was 3-for-4 with an RBI. McDuff and Peruzzi had two hits a piece with Peruzzi and Lundgren each driving in three.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the first-ever meetings between the two teams.
