Baseball Shuts out Alfred Twice to Complete Spring Break Trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team wrapped up its annual spring break trip with a 7-2 record after recording a pair of shutouts over Alfred. Game one saw the Leopards win, 11-0, while the nightcap set a program record for runs in a game with 26 in a 26-0 win.


GAME ONE:  Wentworth 11, Alfred 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth struck for three in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded, senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) walked, sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, and senior Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.) hit a sacrifice fly.
  • The Leopards erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the second with senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly, senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit a two-run single and scored on a wild pitch, and junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) belted a three-run home run.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Petit reached on a fielder's choice which allowed junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) to score.
  • Graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up the win, allowing two runs and striking out five in five innings of work. Freshman Cooper Smith (Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore Connor Whitehead (Southington, Conn.) each pitched an inning in relief. At the plate, six student-athletes recorded a hit apiece.


GAME TWO:  Wentworth 26, Alfred 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black & Gold scored all the runs they would need in the first inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Peruzzi hit a two-run single, sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drove in two with a double, and freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) had an RBI single.
  • Cullinan had an RBI single to get things started in the third inning. Sophomore Matt McDuff (Riverside, R.I.) drew a bases-loaded walk, Peruzzi hit a two-run double, and senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) had a two-run single. A two-run single from graduate student Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.) gave Wentworth a 13-0 lead in the fourth inning.
  • Freshman John Golebieski (Seymour, Conn.) had a two-run double in the fifth inning, igniting the Leopards second six-run inning of the game. Freshman Bennett Leary (Alamo, Calif.) had a two-run single, and sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) had a two-run double. Lundgren reached on an error in the sixth, which scored Golebieski.
  • Golebieski drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning, which was followed by a Leary RBI single, and Lundgren driving in two runs when he reached on an error. Putney drove in a run with an RBI single, and Lundgren scored when junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) reached on an error.
  • Freshman Nigel Cross (Worcester, Mass.) improved to 2-0 on the season, spinning a four-hit, complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts. At the plate, Cullinan was 4-for-6 with three RBI, Robinson added three hits and two RBI, Peruzzi and Lundgren each drove in four runs.
  • The 26 runs scored in game two eclipses the previous mark of 25, which was set in game two of the trip.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • Wentworth outscored its opponents by a 118-36 margin in its first nine games and posted three shutouts in its last four contests.

NEXT UP:

  • Wentworth sadly departs the warmer climate of Central Florida on Saturday morning and had its home opener on Wednesday, March 13, against Rivier, at 5:00 p.m.
