Baseball Sweeps Maine Farmington

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one and senior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Mass.) pitched six shutout innings in game two as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team (14-6) defeated the University of Miane Farmington (4-11), 4-3 and 5-0.


GAME ONE:  Wentworth 4, Maine Farmington 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Farmington put up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, a a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly brought the runs in. The Beavers had runners on second and third with two outs, however, junior Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) got a strikeout to hold the visitors to two runs. In the bottom of the inning, Wentworth tied the game. Lapierre led off with a double and freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) walked. With one out, senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) singled in Lapierre with Roncal going to third and DiPina taking second on the throw. Sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly which plated Roncal.
  • The Beavers broke the tie with a run in the top of the third, scoring on an RBI single and threatened to add to their lead when they left runners on second and third in the fifth inning. Wentworth tied the game in the home half of the inning as sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch. With one out Robinson hit an infield single and stole second. After a strikeout, Roncal singled, moving Robinson to third before scoring on the wild pitch.
  • After Farmington went down in order to start the seventh inning, sophomore Mike Sibert (Lexington, Mass.) walked and eventually went to second on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt. Robinson singled, putting the winning run 90 feet away before Lapierre delivered the game-winning single.
  • Graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up the win in relief (2-2), allowing just two hits and striking out nine in four innings. Aubuchon allowed three runs on two hits in the first three innings. Offensively, Lapierre, Roncal, DiPina, and Robinson each had two hits.


GAME TWO:  Wentworth 5, Maine Farmington 0


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Farmington threatened to score early, putting runners on first and third in the first inning, however Farinas got a strikeout to keep the visitors off the board.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Black & Gold got all the runs they would need, scoring a pair of runs. Senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) singled and went to third on a sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) single. On the play, Cullinan went to second when the relay tried to get Petit at third. Robinson followed with a two-run single.
  • Robinson led off the fifth inning by reaching on an error and went to second when Lapierre singled. Both runners moved up 90 feet before Roncal launched his first collegiate home run. Wentworth had runners on first and second with two outs, however, an inning-ending pickoff held the hosts to three runs.
  • Farinas improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing just two hits and striking out nine. At one point, he set down nine batters in a row. Freshman Nigel Cross (Worcester, Mass.) set down the side in order in the seventh. At the plate, six student-athletes recorded a hit with Roncal driving in three and Robinson driving in two.
