SALEM, Mass. – Seven different student-athletes recorded a hit, including junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.), who also drove in two runs as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team held on to defeat Salem State, 6-4, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Leopards – winners of three straight – improve to 15-6, while the Vikings slip to 9-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first – all coming with two outs. With runners on first and third, sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) singled in senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.), who had reached on a fielder's choice. Senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to plate senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.), who had walked. Prisco doubled in Favazzo to make it 3-0.
  • The Leopards added a run in the fourth to make it 4-0. Prisco led off by reaching on an error and went to second when sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) walked. Both players moved up 90 feet on a double steal and an infield single from junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) plated Prisco.
  • Salem State pulled within a run by scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on an error, an RBI single, and an RBI groundout.
  • Wentworth upped its lead to 5-3 with a run in the sixth. With one out, sophomore Mike Siebert (Lexington, Mass.) singled. Lapierre was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) walked to load the bases. Christian Peruzzi reached on a fielder's choice that scored Siebert. An inning later, the Black & Gold made it 6-4 after Prisco grounded out to score DiPina, who doubled to lead off the inning.
  • A leadoff single and advancement to second on a wild pitch put the tying run in scoring position for the Vikings. A long flyout moved the runner to third An RBI single scored the fourth run, however, freshman Brandon Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) got a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
  • Sophomore Alec Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) pitched five-plus innings to improve to 3-1. He allowed three runs (two earned), scattered eight hits, and walked three. Farinas recorded his first collegiate save, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one over four innings.

  • Today was the 11th all-time meeting between the two teams.
