WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.) went 4-for-5 from the plate; one of five student-athletes to record two or more hits as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team defeated Curry, 13-6, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 17-7 overall and 2-2 in league play while the Colonels fall to 3-14 (0-4).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first inning, Curry nearly took the lead in the top of the second, putting runners on second and third with one out. However, freshman Nigel Cross (Worcester, Mass.) got a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning. Wentworth got on the board in the home half of the inning as Petit hit a one-out single and junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) hit his second home run of the season to make it 2-0.
  • The Leopards scored four times in the fourth inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) and Petit each singled and Favazzo was brought in on an RBI single from Prisco. With the bases loaded, sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) grounded out to score Petit and junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) doubled in Prisco and sophomore Matthew Robinson (Mystic, Conn.).
  • Curry scored its first run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to make it 6-1 but Lapierre drove in Prisco with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, giving the Black & Gold a six-run lead again. Wentworth had a chance to break the game open in the seventh but left the bases loaded.
  • The Colonels chipped away at the Leopards' lead, scoring four times in the eighth inning, coming on a two-run double and a two-run single, both with one out. Freshman Brandon Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) came in and held the lead, getting a pair of fly outs to end the inning.
  • Wentworth tacked on six runs in the home half of the inning, as senior A. T. DiPina had a two-run single and scored when Favazzo singled and went to third on an error, Petit had an RBI single, sophomore Mike Sibert (Lexington, Mass.) had an RBI single, and senior Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
  • With two outs in the top of the ninth, Curry scored on an RBI double.
  • Cross improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing one run on five hits and striking out four. Junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two. Farinas notched his second save of the season, allowing one run on two hits in 1.2 innings. In addition to Petit's four hits, DiPina was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Prisco was 3-for-3 with two walks, four runs scored, and three RBI, Lapierre was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Favazzo was 2-for-4.
