Nichols Takes Two from Baseball

Nichols Takes Two from Baseball

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team was swept by Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Sunday afternoon. This Bison took the first game, 14-4, and the nightcap, 12-2.

GAME ONE:  Nichols 14, Wentworth 4 (8)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nichols wasted little time getting on the board, scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of passed balls and a bases loaded walk, as well as a groundout accounted for the runs.
  • Wentworth cut the lead in half in the top of the second with a pair of runs. Senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) led off with a single and went to second when sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Matt McDuff (Riverside, R.I.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled in DiPina and Favazzo.
  • The Bison tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double and added a run in the third to make it 7-2. A sacrifice fly and an RBI double in the fifth made it 9-2 before a two-run home run in the sixth put the hosts on top, 11-2.
  • Three straight singles by sophomore Mike Sibert (Lexington, Mass.), junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.), and freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) loaded the bases for the Leopards to open the eighth inning. Senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) followed with a two-run double to make it 11-4. Wentworth loaded the bases with one out but were unable to cut further into the lead.
  • Nichols scored on a wild pitch, and RBI single, and an error in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss (3-3). Offensively, eight student-athletes each recorded a hit with Prisco and Peruzzi each driving in a run.

GAME TWO:  Nichols 12, Wentworth 2 (7)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Scoring six runs over the second and third innings, Nichols took a 6-0 lead. In the second inning, the Bison used an RBI double, a bases-loaded hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly, and a fielder's choice to account for the runs, while, an inning later, an RBI double and a fielder's choice made it 6-0.
  • With one out in the top of the fourth, Peruzzi walked and went to this when DiPina singled. Favazzo Singled in Peruzzi and, when Favazzo was caught stealing, DiPina went from third to home on the play.
  • The Bison added a single run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single and came around to score three times in the fifth and once each in the sixth and seventh.
  • Senior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) took the loss (3-1). Five different student-athletes recorded hits, with Favazzo reaching base twice and driving in a run.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 55th and 56th all time meetings between the two teams.
