Baseball Tops #23 Roger Williams

Baseball Tops #23 Roger Williams

WEYMOUTH, Mass. – Four Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball student-athletes recorded two hits apiece, including sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Billerica, Mass.) who also drove in three runs, while freshmen Nigel Cross (Worcester, Mass.) and Brandon Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) recorded the win and the save, respectively, as the Leopards topped No. 23 Roger Williams in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth scored three times in the bottom of the first, taking a lead the Leopards would not relinquish. With one out, freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) singled and went to second when senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) singled. Senior A. T. DiPina followed with a single to score Roncal, and on a failed pickoff attempt of Peruzzi at second, both runners moved up 90 feet. Favazzo grounded out which scored Peruzzi and moved DiPina to third. Junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) walked and stole second, which allowed DiPina to steal home.
  • Roger Williams pulled within a run with a two-run third inning. The Hawks got a leadoff walk and scored a run on a double. A single plated the second run of the inning, and, with two outs and runners on first and second, Roger Williams had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
  • A three-run fifth inning extended Wentworth's lead to 6-2. With two outs, Peruzzi singled and went to third on a DiPina double. Both baserunners scored on a double by Favazzo. Prisco reached on an error, which moved Favazzo to third and freshman Bennett Leary (Alamo, Calif.) singled in Favazzo.
  • With two outs in the sixth, the Hawks had runners at first and second, however, a fielder's choice ended the inning. An inning later, Roger Williams plated a run on a RBI single, however, senior Ryan Putney (Exeter, N.H.) came in and got a fly out to end the inning. Roger Williams loaded the bases in the eighth and scored a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-4. Farinas came in in relief of Putney and induced a groundout to end the inning.
  • After Wentworth stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the eighth inning, Farinas gave up a leadoff single in the ninth, however, got a strikeout and a double play to seal the win.
  • Cross improves to 4-0 as he allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in five innings. Junior Matt Ferrara (East Taunton, Mass.) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Putney allowed one run on two hits in an inning of work, while Farinas notched his third save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work. In addition to Favazzo's two hits, Peruzzi, DiPina, and Leary each had a pair of hits. Peruzzi also drew a pair of walks.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 73rd all-time meeting between the two teams.
