Late Inning Surge Pushes Baseball Past Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Three student-athletes recorded a pair of hits apiece, including senior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) who drove in three runs as the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team scored nine unanswered runs to take a 10-3 win over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After both teams squandered chances in the opening frame, Wentworth got on the board in the top of the second, thanks to an RBI triple from sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.). With two outs, junior Devon Lapierre (Dover, N.H.) singled and was brought in by Robinson a better later.
  • Curry tied the game in the home half of the frame on a sacrifice fly and, an inning later, used an RBI single to take a 2-1 lead. The Colonels added to their lead in the sixth inning on an RBI double.
  • The Leopards reclaimed the lead with a four-run seventh inning. With one out and runners on first and second, Peruzzi doubled in Lapierre, while freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) doubled in Robinson. Roncal stole second and went to third on a sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Burlington, Mass.) single. Roncal scored when Favazzo stole second and an errant throw moved each runner up a base.
  • Wentworth loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and four times. Robinson drove in junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.), who walked to lead off the inning. Freshman John Golebieski (Seymour, Conn.), who singled, scored on a wild pitch, and Peruzzi delivered a two-run single, which plated Lapierre and Robinson. Senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) brought Peruzzi home with a single.
  • Graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) earned the win in relief (4-3), allowing one run on four hits while striking out four. Senior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) started, allowing two runs on five hits over five innings.
  • In addition to his two hits and three RBI, Peruzzi also drew a pair of walks. Robinson was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Favazz0 was 2-for-5. Lapierre reached base four times, going 1-for-2 and drawing three walks.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 68th all-time meeting between the two teams.
