Baseball Battles Bridgewater State in Non-Conference Finale

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Playing in its final non-conference contest of the 2024 campaign, the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team (21-15) was defeated by Bridgewater State (21-13), 11-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Using an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, Bridgewater State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added single runs in the second inning on an RBI single and the third inning on an RBI triple to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
  • The Bears scored four times in the fourth to increase their lead to 8-0, thanks to an RBI double, a bases-loaded walk, and a two-run single.
  • Wentworth broke through in the sixth inning as sophomore Mike Sibert (Billerica, Mass.) led off with a single and with one out, went to second when junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) walked. Sophomore Matthew Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) plated both of them with a double. Senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) singled, which moved Favazzo to third, however, he was thrown out trying to score.
  • The hosts got two runs back in the home half of the inning on a one-out error and a fielder's choice.
  • With one out in the seventh, sophomore Matt Robinson (Mystic, Conn.) singled and went to second on a balk. Sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) reached on an error which plated Robinson. Sibert singled, moving Cullinan to second, however, two outs retired the side. In the bottom of the inning, a Bridgewater State sacrifice fly made it 11-3.
  • Wentworth scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make it 11-5. In the eighth, freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) hit a two-out double and scored on a classmate John Golebieski (Seymour, Conn.) RBI single. An inning later, Sibert led off with a double and, with two outs, came around to score on a Favazzo single.
  • DiPina, Sibert, and Robinson each go 3-for-4 in the game with Favazzo adding two hits and driving in three. Freshman Michael Archambault (Pepperell, Mass.) took the loss (0-1).

  • Today was the 15th all-time meeting between the two teams.
