EAST BOSTON, Mass. – Scoring nine runs over the sixth and seventh innings, the Suffolk University baseball team (25-15) snapped a 3-all tie and defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (21-18), 12-3, in an opening round contest of the 2024 Commonwealth Coast Conference Baseball Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After back-to-back doubles plated Suffolk's first run, the Rams loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly with one out made it 2-0 before the hosts loaded the bases again. However, senior Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) induced a groundout to end the inning.
  • With one out in the second, graduate student Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.) reached on an error and went to second on an error on a pickoff attempt. Junior Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) grounded out, moving Lundgren to third, and freshman Christian Roncal (Glendale, Ariz.) singled to bring him in.
  • The game remained 2-1 until a solo home run in the fifth inning gave the hosts a 3-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, the Black & Gold evened the score, thanks to a two-run home run from senior Michael Petit (Sandwich, Mass.). With one out, senior A. T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) hit a ground-rule double. After a line out, Petit launched his team-leading fourth home run of the season.
  • The bottom of the sixth saw the Rams score three runs on a bases-loaded triple and Suffolk tacked on six more in the seventh, with four of them coming on a grand slam.
  • Roncal had a pair of hits for the Leopards, while Petit drove in two runs. Graduate student Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) took the loss (4-4).

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 24th all-time meeting between the two teams.

NEXT UP:

  • Wentworth will face the loser of Suffolk and Roger Williams on Thursday afternoon (45 minutes after game one) in Bristol, R.I. in an elimination game.
