WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Joey O'Leary (Boston, Mass.) netted the game-tying goal with 5:43 remaining in regulation as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team skated to a 1-all tie against Becker in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Neither team was able to generate many scoring chances in the first period as both the Leopards and Hawks each only had six shots on goal. Wentworth went on the power play twice in the opening frame while Becker has one power-play opportunity.
Becker took advantage of its first power play of the second period as sophomore Romain Wild (Lausanne, Switzerland) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with a goal at 4:54. Sophomore Christian Leon (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Jake Cagnina (South Berwick, Maine) picked up assists on the goal. Shots were even at 11-all in the second period.
For the second night in a row, the Black & Gold needed to rally from a one-goal deficit, and, after peppering junior Grant Martens (Bloomington, Minn.) with shots throughout the period, O'Leary tied the game with his first collegiate marker. Both teams had chance to go ahead late, including when Wentworth went on a power play, however the game headed to overtime. The Leopards had a 15-7 shot advantage in the period.
Wentworth had a 4-2 shot advantage in the extra frame. With 34 seconds left, Becker went on a power play, however, that man advantage was negated with a penalty with three seconds left.
Freshman Tomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) made 25 saves for the Leopards. Martens turned aside 35 shots for the Hawks.
Wentworth (1-3-2, 1-2-1 CCC) steps out of league play Tuesday night, hosting Anna Maria.
