Hockey Suffers Road Setback at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior Austin Morgan (Detroit, Mich.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore Billy Girard (Boca Raton, Fla.) made 19 saves as the 10th-ranked University of New England ice hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophomore Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.) made 13 saves in the first period as he helped keep the University of New England off the board. With 43 seconds left, a pair of penalties were called on the Leopards, which extended into the second period. On the two power plays, Oliver made three saves.
  • The Nor'Easters got on the board at the 2:05 mark when graduate student Tyler Seltenreich (Littleton, Colo.) scored from junior Jared Christy (Costa Mesa, Calif.). UNE made it 2-0 at the 6:12 mark when Christy and junior Jake Fuss (Fairfield, Conn.) set up Morgan. Two minutes and 43 seconds later, the hosts extended their lead to 3-0 on a goal from senior Justin Dixson (Sunnyville, Calif.), which was assisted by freshman Donte' DiPonio (Trenton, Mich.) and Seltenreich.
  • Seltenreich and junior Collin Heinold (Charleston, S.C.) set up graduate student Chris Jones (Seattle, Wash.) on the power play at 6:23 before Morgan rounded out the scoring with his second of the game, coming at 13:01. Fuss and Christy picked up assists on the goal.
  • Girard recorded his first shutout of the season, making 14 of his 19 saves over the first two periods. With time winding down, he made a save of a senior Jake McKenelley (Middleton, Mass.) shot on the doorstep to preserve the shutout.
  • Oliver made 31 saves, marking the eighth time this season he has made 30 or more saves.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight marked the 15th all-time meeting between the two teams. UNE has won the last three meetings and leads the all-time series, 12-2-1.
