EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Kalle Sundell's (Helsinki, Finland) goal late in the first period stood up as the game winner as the Curry College ice hockey team fended off a furious Wentworth Institute of Technology rally as the Colonels edged the Leopards, 3-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Curry jumped on the board at the 3:39 mark when junior Timmy Kent (Parkland, Fla.) picked off a pass in the Wentworth zone and scored an unassisted goal. The Colonels upped their lead to 2-0 nearly eight minutes later as senior Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ont.) scored from graduate students Tyler Lindstrom (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Daniel Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass.).
  • Kent and junior Mark Zhukov (St. Petersburg, Russia) set up Sundell as the Colonels were 1:40 into the only man-advantage situation of the opening period. Curry had a 14-5 shot advantage with senior Ryan Bonnvie (Falmouth, Maine) making 11 saves, many of which from close range.
  • The Leopards, who had a 6-4 shot advantage in the second period, pulled to within a pair of goals as junior Anthony Blad (Suffield, Conn.) stopped a clearing attempt from leaving the zone and sent the puck towards the net where senior Joey O'Leary (Boston, Mass.) put the puck home.
  • Both teams had chances in the early part of the third period, but it was Wentworth which scored the only goal of the frame. Junior Kevin Obssuth (Chester, N.J.) caused a turnover in front and put a shot past senior Reid Cooper (Corman Park, Sask.). With 1:26 left, senior Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) was pulled for an extra attacker. During this time, the Black & Gold had four shot attempts with sophomore Matt Smoliga (Glenville, Ill.) putting two attempts on net.
  • Cooper made 17 saves in the win. Bonnvie made 12 saves in 30:09 of action while Draper finished the game, making 12 saves.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight was the 50th all-time meeting between the two teams. Winners of three in a row, Curry holds a 27-18-5 series edge.
