Hockey Closes out Regular Season at Suffolk

CHARLESTOWN, Mass. – Senior Shawn Montgomery Natick, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to help the Suffolk university ice hockey team defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1, in the regular-season finale for both Commonwealth Coast Conference squads Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Suffolk scored two goals in a span of 5:10 in the third period to take the lead. At the 13:51 mark, junior Nick Lachaine (Lakeville, Conn.) scored from classmate Devin Lowe (Owings Mills, Md.). With 59 seconds left in the period, Montgomery scored his first of the game, off an assist from sophomore Ryan Harrigan (Scituate, Mass.). The hosts had a 14-6 shot advantage in the opening period.
  • While neither team scored in the second period, Wentworth was able to successfully kill off a major penalty that lasted the first 4:01 of the period. The Leopards had a 10-9 shot advantage in the period.
  • After putting four shots on net in the early part of the third period, Wentworth drew within a goal when senior Joey O'Leary (Boston, Mass.) put home his 12th of the season, from classmate Jake McKenelley (Middleton, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Smoliga Glenville, Ill.).
  • Wentworth had numerous chances to tie the game, however, Suffolk junior Cal Wilcox (Pomfret, Conn.) kept it a one-goal game. With 1:44 left, Montgomery scored an insurance goal off a feed from Harrigan. Sophomore Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.) was pulled for an extra attacker after the goal was scored, however, the leopards were unable to generate any scoring chances.
  • Wilcox made 34 saves in the win while Oliver stopped 27 shots. Wentworth had a 35-34 shot advantage.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight was the 41st meeting between the two teams. Suffolk has won four in a row, however, Wentworth lead the series 23-16-2.

NEXT UP:

  • Wentworth will be seeded seventh in the upcoming CCC Tournament and will travel to a second-seeded opponent to be detrmined for a quarterfinal round game on Saturday, February 26.
