Hockey Falls to Endicott in CCC Quarterfinals

BEVERLY, Mass. – Junior Connor Amsley (Carlisle, Pa.) and sophomore Ryan Gaulin (Kingston, N.H.) each scored a pair of goals as the second-seeded and 13th-ranked Endicott College hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-1, in a quarterfinal round game of the 2022 Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament.

With the win the Gulls improve to 19-6-1 overall and will host a semifinal round game on Wednesday night. The Leopards see their season come to a close at 5-18-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth went on an early power play, which resulted in four shot attempts, including one put on net by junior Kevin Obssuth (Chester, N.J.) which was saved by senior Conor O'Brien (Pinellas Park, Fla.). At the 7:03 mark, Endicott got on the board when junior Thomas Albert (Reading, Mass.) scored from sophomore Andrew Kurapov (Corvallis, Idaho). Albert intercepted a clearing pass and played give and go with Kurapov before depositing a shot from the left side. The Gulls had a 10-8 shot advantage in the first period.
  • The Gulls added to their lead at the 5:28 mark of the second period when Kurapov shored a power-play goal when he put home a shot from in front, assisted by freshman Ryan Willett (Bayville, N.Y.) and junior Mitch Shaheen (North Andover, Mass.). With 1:27 left in the period, the Leopards pulled back within a goal. After freshman Mitch McGinn won faceoff in the Wentworth zone, sophomore Matt Smoliga (Glenville, Ill.) sent a pass to sophomore Josh Faussett (Okemos, Mich.), who fed freshman Seah Brown (Seabrook, N.H.) for his fourth of the season. Endicott had a 14-7 shot advantage in the period.
  • Endicott made it a two-goal game at the 2:51 mark of the third period when junior Amsley took a pass from junior Zach Mazur (Lancaster, N.Y.) which was deflected in front and put a shot past sophomore Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.). The Gulls scored twice in a span of 3:39 as Amsley scored his second at 9:11 and Gaulin scored at 12:50. Gaulin added an extra-net goal with 1:35 left.
  • O'Brien made 35 saves for Endicott while Oliver had his 10th 30-plus save game of the season, making 33. Endicott had a 39-26 shot advantage and was 1-for-3 on the power play while Wentworth was 0-for-4.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today was the 18th all-time meeting between the two teams. Endicott leads the all-time series, 15-3. Included in this series total is the third postseason matchup where the Gulls lead 3-0.
