EVERETT, Mass. – Five different student-athletes scored goals while senior Collin Heinold (Charleston, S.C.) had three assists as the University of New England ice hockey team skated past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 5-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS:

RECORDS:  UNE:  13-5-1 (11-4-0 CCC); WIT:  4-14-1 (2-12-1 CCC)
SHOTS:  UNE:  36; WIT:  23
PENALTIES/MINUTES:  UNE:  4/8; WIT:  4/8
POWER PLAYS:  UNE:  2-3; WIT:  0-3
GOALIE SAVES:  UNE:  Billy Girard, 22; WIT:  Jack McGovern, 31

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A fast-paced first period yielded many scoring chances for both teams, with Wentworth having a pair of shots on goal in the early going. However, both Leopard freshman netminder Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) and University of New England junior Billy Girard (Boca Raton, Fla.) were up to the task, making 11 and five saves, respectively, to help keep the game scoreless after the first period.
  • UNE broke the ice at the 6:52 mark of the second period to start a three-goal middle frame. Freshman David Wilcox (Northbrook, Ill.) found the back of the net with Heinold picking up his first helper of the afternoon. A minute and 39 seconds later, senior Jared Christy (Costa Mesa, Calif.) gave the Nor'Easters a 2-0 lead while senior Jake Fuss (Fairfield, Conn.) tallied a power-play goal at 14:06 to make it 3-0.
  • The Nor'Easters increased their lead to 4-0 at the 2:25 mark of the third when freshman Noah Szretter (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored on the power play. Wentworth got on the board 2:21 later as sophomore Sean Brown (Salem, N.H.) tallied from junior Matt Smoliga (Glenville, Ill.) and sophomore Mitch McGinn(Salem, N.H.).
  • With 4:02 left in the contest, Wentworth went on the power play and pulled McGovern for an extra attacker. However, graduate student Daniel Winslow (Fairfield, Conn.) intercepted a pass and sent it the length of the ice for a shorthanded, empty-net goal.
  • Girard made 22 saves for UNE while McGovern made 31 for the Black & Gold.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today was the 18th all-time meeting between the two teams. UNE leads, 15-2-1..
