Hockey Fends Off Vermont State Castleton in Season Opener

RUTLAND, Vt. – Five different student-athletes tallied goals as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (1-0) took down Vermont State Castleton (0-1) on the road in their season opener Friday night by a final score of 5-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth applied the pressure early, resulting in a goal to break the ice at the 6:44 mark. Junior Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) sent a backhander across the slot, with the puck ricocheting into the goal for the Leopards' initial tally of the new season.
  • The Black & Gold doubled their lead later in the first at the 13:39 mark on a shorthanded tally by senior Josh Faussett (Okemos, Mich.), who took it upon himself to put a wrister short side behind junior Simon Brenter (Bodensdorf, Austria) to put the visitors ahead 2-0.
  • Wentworth continued their scoring splurge into the second period as sophomore Ian Worthley (Saugus, Mass.) stole a puck from below the goal line and fed sophomore Nikolas Sombrowski (Fernie, B.C.) out front, who scored just 33 seconds into the second to raise the score to 3-0.
  • Senior Charlie Reid (Marshfield, Mass.) beat Brenter under the glove just 1:19 after Sombrowski's goal, bringing Wentworth's advantage to 4-0 and ending Brenter's night.
  • Vermont State Castleton broke the shutout bid at the 16:16 mark of the second period as a pass by freshman Matteo Turrin (Montreal, Quebec) was directed into the goal by classmate Cam Reid (Kimberley, B.C.), cutting the host's deficit to 4-1.
  • The Spartans dwindled the deficit to two late in the third period as a shot by junior Andrew Stefura (Boston, Mass.) that originally came off the back boards beat senior Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.) at the 16:38 mark of the third.
  • Wentworth added insurance at the 17:43 mark on an empty-net tally by graduate student Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ont.), bringing the Leopards' lead to 5-2.
  • Oliver made 35 saves in the win for the Leopards while Brenter stopped 15 before junior Dominic Rodrigue (Quebec City, Quebec) made 21 stops in relief.
