EVERETT, Mass. – In their home opener Saturday afternoon, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (2-2, 1-1 CCC) battled past Nichols (1-2, 1-1 CCC) by a 3-2 score, good for their first Commonwealth Coast Conference win in the opening weekend of league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wentworth broke the ice 7:54 into the opening frame as sophomore Nolan Lowe (Toronto, Ont.) slid the puck down to a streaking senior Josh Faussett (Okemos, Mich.), who sailed a puck over the shoulder of the Nichols' goaltender to put the Leopards ahead 1-0.
- Nichols tied the score with 7:14 left in the first as a backhander from the slot by junior Kaiden Scott (Detroit, Mich.) found the twine.
- The Bison took a 2-1 lead 12:48 into the second frame as sophomore Jack Lee (Naperville, Ill.) stretched across the crease with a backhander that beat senior Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.) for a shorthanded tally.
- 3:58 after Lee's goal, the Black & Gold knotted the score at two-all as senior Charlie Reid (Marshfield, Mass.) cashed in on a rebound right out front of freshman Nick Anderson (North Chili, N.Y.).
- The Leopards took their second lead of the day less than a minute after Reid's tally as junior Mitch McGinn (Salem, N.H.) sent a slick feed across the slot to graduate student Owen Rudicus (Duxbury, Mass.), who hit nothing but net to put the Leopards ahead 3-2 with 3:03 to go in the second period.
- Despite a flurry of chances for the Bison in the third period, outshooting the Leopards 13-5, Oliver stood pat, backstopping the Leopards with a 31-save outing. Anderson stopped 21 in the setback for the Bison.
