EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Matthew Fawcett (Johnston, R.I.) tallied a goal and two assists as the Salve Regina men's ice hockey team (4-0, 2-0 CCC) had a third-period scoring splurge that gave them a 5-2 decision over the Wentworth Institute of Technology (3-3, 1-2 CCC) in conference action Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A scoreless first period featured a 19-11 shot advantage in favor of the Seahawks, with sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) turning aside all 19.
  • Salve Regina broke the ice just 23 seconds into the second frame as Fawcett tipped in a shot from the point by junior Ian Tookenay (Fort Francis, Ont.), giving the Seahawks a 1-0 edge.
  • The Seahawks doubled their lead 5:08 into the third as a diving play by sophomore Jonathon Hammel (Duxbury, Mass.) in front of the crease was just enough for him to chip in a backhander within McGovern's five-hole, giving Salve Regina a 2-0 lead.
  • A set play off the draw for the Seahawks added another goal to their lead at the 7:03 mark as Fawcett won the draw directly to the stick of senior Johnny Mulera (Rockville, Md.), who flashed the puck past McGovern.
  • The Leopards stopped the Seahawks scoring splurge on the powerplay at the 10:49 mark of the second frame as a dish by senior Charlie Reid (Marshfield, Mass.) from behind the net landed on the stick of freshman Desmond Johnson (Naperville, Ill.), who potted his first collegiate goal from the point to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • Salve Regina regained their three-goal lead 57 seconds after Johnson's tally as a streaking junior Josh Kroon (Calgary, Atla.) sent a shot off the crossbar and into the net, pushing the score to 4-1.
  • Wentworth again scored on the powerplay, this time at the 16:25 mark, as sophomore Nolan Lowe (Toronto, Ont.) cleaned up on a rebound out front on a shot by Johnson, cutting Salve Regina's lead to 4-2.
  • Freshman Aidan Coupe (Gilbert, Ariz.) cashed in on an empty net at the 18:42 mark, lifting the Seahawks to a 5-2 win. McGovern made 38 saves in the setback for the Leopards while senior Cayden Bailey (Estero, Fla.) posted 34 stops in goal for the Seahawks.
