NEWPORT, R.I. – Despite a late push, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (3-4, 1-3 CCC) couldn't come back from a 3-0 deficit, suffering a 3-1 defeat to the Seahawks of Salve Regina (6-0, 4-0 CCC) in CCC action Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Salve Regina got on the board with just a minute left in the opening period as senior Seth Benson (Moorehead, Minn.) tallied the icebreaker on a backhander in the low slot.
- The hosts added to their lead on the powerplay with 4:54 to go in the second period as sophomore Logan Calder (Portage La Prairie, Man.) ripped a one-timer on a pass by freshman Aidan Coupe (Gilbert, Ariz.).
- Salve Regina added a tally to their lead 2:57 into the final frame as a streaking sophomore Walter Baumann (Gates Mills, Ohio) beat senior Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.) with a wrist shot, bringing the score to 3-0.
- On the powerplay with just over three minutes to go, Wentworth cut the deficit to two as sophomore Ian Worthley (Saugus, Mass.) cashed in on a rebound off of a shot by sophomore Nikolas Sombrowski (Fernie, B.C.), marking a 3-1 score.
- Wentworth's pressure in the final going wasn't enough, even with another powerplay with 2:13 to go, as Salve Regina held on for 3-1 win despite being outshot 31-27. Oliver made 24 saves for the Leopards while senior Cayden Bailey (Estero, Fla.) posted 30 stops for the Seahawks.
