EVERETT, Mass. – Led by a 37-save performance by sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) and five different goal scorers, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (4-7, 2-6 CCC) dominated the Curry Colonels (7-3-1, 5-3 CCC) in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon, earning a 5-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Curry tallied on the powerplay nearly halfway through the first period as freshman Wilheim Patriksson (Stockholm, Sweden) chipped in a ricochet off of the boards, giving the visitors a 1-0 edge 7:24 into the contest.
  • Wentworth knotted the score at one apiece at the 9:15 mark as sophomore Travis Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) fired a shot from the top edge of the circle that beat senior Roland Polasek (Bor, Czech Republic).
  • The Leopards took the lead on the powerplay at the 14:53 mark of the first period as freshman Desmond Johnson's (Naperville, Ill.) shot from the point found the twine, giving Wentworth a 2-1 edge.
  • Junior Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) added to Wentworth's lead with 1:35 to go in the first frame on another shot that blistered past Polasek, giving the Black & Gold a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
  • A solo effort by senior Josh Faussett (Okemos, Mich.) gave the Leopards a 4-1 advantage 2:30 into the second period as the senior went nearly coast-to-coast and potted a goal on the backhand.
  • Graduate student Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ont.) added to Wentworth's advantage with 3:01 to go in the second period on a top-shelf shot on the doorstep, bringing the Leopards' lead to 5-1.
  • McGovern backstopped Wentworth to a dominant win, making 37 stops on 38 saves en route to the conference win. Polasek made four saves before freshman Shane Soderwall (Algonquin, Ill.) stopped seven in relief.
