EVERETT, Mass. – A 3-3 draw between the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (6-9-1, 2-6-1 CCC) and Nichols Bison (4-8-3, 2-4-3 CCC) in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Friday night finished off with the Leopards grabbing an extra point in the league's standing as shootout goals by sophomore Nolan Lowe (Toronto, Ont.) and graduate student Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ont.) made the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nichols got on the board just under eight minutes into the opening frame as freshman Zach Vandale (Branford, Conn.) ripped a quick shot off an odd-man rush, giving the Bison a 1-0 edge.
  • The visitors pushed their lead to 2-0 thanks to a goal right out front by freshman CJ Zezima (Norwalk, Conn.), who received a pass from behind the goal like from junior Nathan Carl (Sherwood Park, Alta.) at the 15:43 mark of the first period.
  • Wentworth cut the deficit to one late in the second at the 16:15 mark as freshman Dane Probe's (Calgary, Alta.) offensive zone faceoff win landed right on the stick of Young, who fired a shot beneath junior Tyler Bost (Mahwah, N.J.) to mark a 2-1 score.
  • The Leopards knotted the game at two aside on the powerplay just under two minutes after Young's goal as freshman Desmond Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) sniped a shot from the point.
  • Nichols regained their lead on the powerplay just 24 seconds in the third period as junior Gabe Temple (Fowlerville, Mich.) sank a one-timer past sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.), raising the score to 3-2.
  • The Black & Gold again tied the score, this time at three-all, as sophomore Seth Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) chipped in a shot right out front at the 3:03 mark.
  • The two teams played to a stalemate through overtime, with each team rifling one shot on goal. In the shootout, Lowe scored first for the Leopards, while Temple was denied. Young tallied for the Leopards to put them ahead 2-0, with the deficit dwindled to 2-1 on a Carl goal. Nichols' final shootout attempt was blanked by McGovern, who finished the night with 33 stops. Bost turned aside 24 shots for the Bison.
