SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Six unanswered goals by Wentworth Institute of Technology men's ice hockey team (7-11-1, 3-8-1 CCC) proved to be the difference in conference action Friday night as the Leopards dominated the Western New England Golden Bears (4-13-2, 1-9-2 CCC), resulting in a 6-2 final score.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Golden Bears broke the ice with just 50 seconds left in the opening frame as junior Nolan Dawson (Airdrie, Alta.) picked up a loose puck off of a rebound out front and potted it, putting the hosts ahead 1-0.
  • A bouncing puck out front off the stick of junior Mitch McGinn (Salem, N.H.) found the tape of sophomore Nolan Lowe (Toronto, Ont.), who batted in the puck at the 7:45 mark of the second period to knot the game at one aside.
  • Wentworth took the lead just under four minutes after Lowe's tally as a shot in the slot by sophomore Nikolas Sombrowski (Fernie, B.C.) found the twine, marking a 2-1 score.
  • The Leopards' scoring surge continued 2:29 after Sombrowski's goal as McGinn batted a puck out of mid air past senior Anthony Aureliano (Old Brookville, N.Y.), raising the score to 3-1.
  • Graduate student Owen Rudicus (Duxbury, Mass.) pushed Wentworth's lead to 4-1 with 5:13 left in the second period as a feed by graduate student Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ont.) found the stick of a wide open Rudicus out front.
  • The Leopards extended their lead to 5-1 5:13 into the final period as sophomore Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) finished a slick feed by classmate Travis Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) just on the doorstep.
  • With 2:32 remaining, Sombrowski potted his second of the game, this time on the powerplay, on a McGinn feed from behind the net, raising the score to 6-1.
  • WNE cut the deficit to 6-2 with 33 seconds to go as a shot by freshman Sam Logan (Wethersfield, Conn.) trickled past sophomore Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.). McGovern turned 33 of the hosts' 35 shots aside while Aureliano made 35 saves in the setback. McGinn finished with one goal and three assists, good for a career-high four-point outing.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Wentworth holds the all-time series lead, 35-10-1.
