EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Tao Ishizuka (Providence, R.I.) scored a pair of goals and junior Eelis Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) recorded a pair of assists as the 11th-ranked Curry College ice hockey team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Curry wasted little time getting on the board as Ishizuka tipped home a shot attempt from sophomore Matt Connor (Nottingham, N.H.) just 54 seconds into the game. Laaksonen also picked up an assist on the goal. At the 8:13 mark, Wentworth tied the game up as sophomore Seth Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) intercepted a clearing pass and put home his third marker of the season. Freshman Ethan Lim (Coral Gables, Fla.) nearly gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead late in the period, however, his shot clanged off the post.
- At 5:20 of the second period, freshman Blake Rothstein (Massapequa, N.Y.) fed sophomore Ben Biester (Danville, Calif.) to give the Colonels a 2-1 lead. With 5:13 left, junior Jacob Crespo (Mount Holly, N.J.) and Laaksonen set up Ishizuka to make it 3-1.
- Wentworth sophomore Jack Govern (Ancaster, Ont.) singlehandedly kept it a 3-1 game with 16 saves in the third period, many of which came at point-blank range. With just over three minutes remaining, he was pulled for an extra attacker While the Leopards kept the puck in the offensive zone for the majority of the time, a turnover led to a sophomore Taurin Haddon-Harris (Boca Raton, Fla.) empty-net goal.
- McGovern made 28 saves. Wentworth was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
