Men's Lacrosse Falls to MIT on the Road

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team returned to the field Wednesday, as the Leopards fell 20-4 to MIT.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Engineers struck quickly in the opening minutes, scoring three goals in the first three minutes, as Andy Shin (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) scored twice for MIT to put the home team ahead. After another goal for the Engineers, the Leopards got on the board with 7:31 remaining in the opening quarter. Junior midfielder Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) connected on the goal for Wentworth, but MIT answered back with a goal just 23 seconds later to take a 5-1 lead. The score remained the same until late in the first, when Ryan Gabhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) scored the first of his five goals to give the Engineers a five-goal advantage heading into the second.
  • Senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made three saves in the first nine minutes of the second, but MIT eventually broke through, scoring two goals in just over a minute to go up 9-1. The teams played several minutes with no scoring until freshman attack Erik Vogt (Warwick, N.Y.) scored his fourth goal of the year with 4:23 remaining. The Engineers, however, came back with three goals in the final 3:19 of the quarter, extending their lead to 10 goals at the half.
  • The home team picked up where they left off to start the third, as coming out of the break the Engineers scored just 39 seconds in to go up 13-2. Two goals in a 46 second span gave them a 13-goal advantage, and MIT was able to shut out the Leopards in the quarter. Munroe made four saves in the period, but the Engineers were able to connect on four more goals before the end of the third, taking a 19-2 lead into the fourth.
  • Wentworth was able to pick up a pair of goals in the final period, as sophomore attack Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) and senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) both scored their second goals of the season. The Engineers added one more in the fourth, as the home team came away with a 20-4 victory on the night.

NOTES

  • MIT outshot Wentworth 57-20 while picking up 48 ground balls to the Leopards' 31.
  • The Engineers were 17-of-21 on clear attempts, while the Leopards went 14-of-29.

THE SERIES

  • This was the 18th time the two programs have met, with MIT holding a 15-3 advantage in the series.

NEXT 

  • The Leopards are back at home Friday afternoon, as Wentworth hosts Emmanuel College at 4:00 p.m.
