INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Joseph's (Me.) took an early lead, scoring the first two goals of the game as the Leopards were not able to get their offense going in the opening minutes. But just 23 seconds after falling behind 2-0, sophomore attack Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla.) got Wentworth on the board with the first of his three goals on the day. Then in the span on 1:15, the Leopards jumped in front. Senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) scored back-to-back goals, putting Wentworth ahead 3-2. However, the Monks came back to tie it after the second goal of the day by Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) to knot the score at three. The Leopards reclaimed the lead with just 43 seconds remaining in the first as Maklan picked up his second of the day to put Wentworth up 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
  • The Leopards opened up a three goal lead in the early stages of the second. Madden scored less than a minute in, followed by junior midfielder Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) scoring one of his four goals to put Wentworth ahead 6-3. Only 23 seconds later, Maklan added his third of the day to make it a four goal game. Freshman attack Erik Vogt (Warwick, N.Y.) provided the assists on the latter two goals for the Leopards. St. Joseph's came back though, outscoring Wentworth 3-1 throughout the rest of the period. After the teams traded goals, a pair of late scores by the Monks in a 46-second span brought the game to an 8-6 Leopards lead at the half.
  • Senior attack Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) scored to open up the third quarter, but was answered by Max Lacy's (Salisbury, N.H.) third goal of the day for St. Joseph's. Madden and McKenna were able to come back with a pair of Wentworth goals to give them a lead of four, but Michaud and Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) came back with a pair for the Monks, who always found a way to answer when it looked like Wentworth might pull away. The back-and-forth continued through the end of the third, as sophomore midfielder Dryden Fisher (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore attack Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) put up two more goals for the Leopards, but they were answered by two Monk goals, the final one coming with 10 seconds remaining to cut Wentworth's lead to 13-11 going into the fourth quarter.
  • McKenna scored his fourth of the day 40 seconds into the final period, which was countered by Lacy scoring his fourth as well. Prunier came back with a goal for the Leopards with 6:57 remaining to give Wentworth a 15-12 lead. Wentworth then received a man-up opportunity, but it was St. Joseph's who scored during the penalty, picking up a goal while down a man to pull within two. Senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) came through with two saves during the latter stages of the fourth, but the Monks were once again able to break through, scoring with 45 seconds remaining to make it a one goal game. However, the Leopards were able to hold off the attack, hanging on to win by a score of 15-14.
