INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Misericordia started off strong right out of the gate, winning the opening faceoff and scoring on their first shot to take the lead just 19 seconds into the game. The Leopards tied it up just over a minute later courtesy of a goal by senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.). Madden continued his strong play the rest of the quarter, scoring the next two goals to pick up a first quarter hat trick and give Wentworth a 3-1 lead in the latter stages of the opening period. Sophomore attack Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) provided the assist on two of Madden's goals and led the Leopards with three total on the day. Senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made a trio of saves following Wentworth's third goal and made seven stops total in the quarter, but the Cougars were able to break through with just under two minutes remaining to cut the lead to 3-2 going into the second.
  • The Cougars picked up their offense throughout the second quarter, starting the period with four goals in the first eight minutes. Robert Wagner (Mullica Hill, N.J.), who scored a game-high five goals on the day, put in three during the second, the last of which gave Misericordia a 5-4 lead with 7:17 remaining. Freshman attack Erik Vogt (Warwick, N.Y.) and senior attack Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) scored a pair for the Leopards in the second. Prunier's goal, coming on the man-advantage with 5:15 left, pulled Wentworth to within a goal at 6-5, but the Cougars came back with two goals in a 36-second span to extend their lead to three goals going into the half.
  • The third quarter was controlled by Misericordia, as the Cougars outscored the Leopards 5-0 in the frame. Wagner picked up two more goals, and Ryan Vandenberg (Newton, N.J.) added a pair as well. Misericordia outshot the Leopards 13-10 during the quarter, and won the turnover battle in the period. Wentworth faced a 13-5 deficit heading into the final quarter after the Cougars' strong third.
  • The Leopards picked up a quick goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter, as sophomore midfielder Dryden Fisher (Haverhill, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal for Wentworth. However, the Misericordia defense settled in following the goal. Cougar goalkeeper Chris Straub (Reading, Pa.) made five saves in the fourth, allowing just one more goal that came with 2:33 to go off the stick of Prunier, with Madden providing the assist. Munroe made six saves in the fourth, shutting the Cougars out in the game's final period, but the Leopards still fell by a 13-7 final score.
