INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Leopards jumped in front in the opening minute of the game. After winning the opening faceoff, Wentworth went down the field and got a goal by sophomore attack Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.), coming off an assist by senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H) to make it a 1-0 game. The Leopards took a penalty shortly after the goal to give the Nor'easters a man-up opportunity, but were able to successfully kill it off. However, UNE quickly came back to take the lead, scoring two goals in a span of 1:12 to go up 2-1 with 6:15 gone by in the opening quarter. The home team took possession following their goals and threatened to make it a 3-1 game, but senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) made a save to keep it a one-goal game. After neither team was able to convert on their next possessions, the Leopards tied it at two with 5:25 remaining, as junior midfielder Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) put one in the back of the net to even the score. Just over a minute later, a penalty on the Nor'easters gave Wentworth a man-up chance, but UNE goalkeeper Matt Deyette (North Greenbush, N.Y.) was able to make a pair of saves to deny the Leopards from taking the lead. Munroe answered with a save of his own, but UNE was able to put one in with 1:52 remaining to take a one-goal advantage into the second period.
  • Neither team was able to get going offensively to open the second, with both squads registering just one shot on goal in the opening minutes. But just short of the four-minute mark in the period, UNE extended its lead to two goals. The Leopards won the ensuing faceoff and got a shot on goal seconds later, but were turned aside by Deyette. After another save by the Nor'easter goalkeeper, Wentworth received a man-advantage and wasted no time in cutting the deficit to one. Bouley scored his second of the game with 6:45 remaining to make it a 4-3 score, and wasn't done there. The sophomore then tied the game just 46 seconds later with his third on the afternoon with just under six minutes left. UNE came right back though, as the Leopards took a pair of penalties and the Nor'easters capitalized to take the lead back with one second remaining on the penalties. After Munroe made one of his 12 saves with just over a minute to play, the Leopards started back the other way and scored the tying goal. With just 34 seconds remaining, senior attack Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) scored to tie it at 6-6 going into the half, coming off another assist by Madden.
  • Wentworth took the lead for the first time since the opening quarter right away in the third, as freshman attack Erik Vogt (Warwick, N.Y.) scored the first of his two goals on the day to make it a 7-6 game just 49 seconds into the quarter. Following the goal, both teams took one-minute penalties but couldn't convert. Moments after another UNE penalty had ended, Vogt picked up his second to give the Leopards a two-goal lead. Wentworth didn't stop there, winning the faceoff and going right down the field to score once again. Prunier then scored just 33 seconds after Vogt's latter goal, as four straight Wentworth goals gave them a 9-6 lead with 5:34 elapsed in the third. The Nor'easters came back to pull within one goal, however, scoring the next two to make it a 9-8 game with 4:05 left. After killing off a two-man advantage for UNE, the Leopards got three shots off in the final minute of the quarter, converting on the final one to go ahead 10-8 at the end of the third. Bouley picked up the goal with 26 seconds remaining, with Vogt providing the assist.
  • The Nor'easters put a shot on goal right away to start the fourth, but Munroe turned it aside to preserve the two-goal lead. Wentworth then came back with three shots in a one-minute span, but couldn't connect to extend their lead. Both teams were strong defensively in the quarter, as neither team scored over the first nine minutes of the final period. But following an unsuccessful man-up opportunity, the Leopards put one in with 6:30 left in the game on Prunier's third of the day, coming off an assist by Bouley to make it 11-8. Then after another pair of defensive stops, Wentworth scored once again with 3:11 remaining, as Prunier put in another to give the Leopards a four-goal lead. The Nor'easters scored a late goal with 38 seconds left, but Wentworth closed it out with a 12-9 victory to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
