Second Quarter Run Lifts Western New England Past Men's Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass. – Using a 12-0 run spanning just over 24 minutes, the Western New England University men's lacrosse team snapped 4-all tie as the Golden Bears prevailed, 18-9, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

With the win Western New England improves to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 6-4 and suffer their first CCC setback, standing at 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Scoring twice in a 47-second stretch, Western New England took a 2-0 lead on goals from graduate student Matt Greer (South Windsor, Conn.) and senior Noah Rust (Windham, N.H.). Wentworth struck for the next three with senior Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) factoring in on all three as he assisted on classmate Sam Prunier's (Hollis, N.H.) goal with 11:25 left and his goals at 7:26 and 3:31 tied and gave the Leopards a 3-2 lead. The Golden Bears tied the game at 3-all when sophomore Joseph Contino (Port Washington, N.Y.) scored with 1:56 left, however, the Black & Gold responded on a goal from freshman Jared Hiller (North Andover, Mass.) to take a 4-3 lead with 19 seconds left. Graduate student Jack Seiter (Ridgewood, N.J.) won the ensuing faceoff and eventually scored with four seconds left to tie the game after the first 15 minutes of action.
  • The Golden Bears held the Leopards scoreless in the second quarter and put up eight goals to take a 12-4 lead Senior Mike Bannon (Edmond, Okla.) had two goals and two assists during this stretch and graduate student Jared Newall (Stratford, Conn.) scored three times.
  • Western New England scored the first four goals of the second half with Bannon and Newall each tallying once before sophomore Dryden Fisher (Haverhill, Mass.) ended the Leopards' scoring drought. Newall scored twice in 3:08 to make it 18-5 after three quarters.
  • Wentworth held the visitors off the scoreboard for the final 18:08, tallying four times in the fourth quarter as Hiller netted a pair and Fisher and sophomore Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) each scored once.
  • Hiller finished the game with three goals while Madden had two goals and one assist. Junior Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) had a pair of assists. Graduate student Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.), Fisher, and senior Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.) each scooped up four ground balls while freshman Calvin Jozokos (Pelham, N.H.) caused a pair of turnovers. Munroe made 12 saves in between the pipes.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today was the 15th all-time meeting between the two teams. Western New England is 15-0 in the series.
