Men's Lacrosse Falls to Roger Williams in Saturday Afternoon Matchup

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-7 defeat Saturday, April 16, as Roger Williams University took the victory in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Leopards got off to a hot start, scoring twice in the first 2:20 of the game. Senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H) got the first goal of the game a minute in, and junior midfielder Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) scored just past the two minute mark, putting Wentworth out in front 2-0. The Leopards got three more shots on goal over the next two minutes, but were turned aside each time by Max Kimmel (Milford, Conn.), who made 16 saves for the Hawks. Wentworth took a penalty shortly after and were able to kill it off, but with 6:50 left in the opening quarter Roger Williams got on the board. Tim Mullane (Hanover, Mass.), who had two goals and three assists on the day, put in the first goal for the home team as they pulled within one. The Hawks then struck but with two goals in a span of 1:20 to jump in front 3-2 with 3:52 remaining. Roger Williams put one more on the scoreboard before the period ended, as Jared Grier scored one of his three goals with a little over a minute left to take a two-goal advantage into the second.
  • Wentworth cut their deficit to one in the opening minute, as sophomore attack Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) scored 31 seconds in to make it a 4-3 game. After a pair of saves by senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass.), who made 10 stops total, the Hawks put three goals in 1:24 to extend their lead to 7-3. Roger Williams then took a pair of penalties, and the Leopards capitalized to get back in the game. Sophomore attack Logan Maklan (Boca Raton, Fla) scored twice on the man advantage, with senior attack Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) providing both assists as Wentworth cut the lead to 7-5. Late in the period, Madden picked up his second of the day, getting the Leopards within a goal going into halftime at 7-6.
  • The Leopards had several chances on the offensive end to start the third, but Kimmel was able to shut the door on four Wentworth shots in the opening three minutes. Munroe then made four saves of his own, keeping the Hawks from extending their lead to multiple goals. The Leopards had a chance with just over six minutes left in the third, but a shot by McKenna rang off the crossbar, keeping the visitors down by a goal. Both teams took 30-second penalties in the final minutes of the period, but were able to kill them off successfully as the teams played to a scoreless third quarter.
  • After another penalty by the Hawks to start the fourth, the Leopards tied it with just over two minutes gone by on a goal by Madden. After Wentworth killed off another penalty, a pair of shots by McKenna and Madden were turned aside. Then with 5:34 left in the game, Roger Williams took the lead on Mullane's second goal. Just 41 seconds later, Grier scored as well to put the home team up by two. The Leopards were unable to match the Hawks in the fourth, as Roger Williams added two more late goals to secure an 11-7 victory.

 

NOTES

  • Wentworth won the shots battle 37-34, and picked up 24 ground balls to Roger Williams' 22.
  • The Leopards were 12-of-19 on faceoffs, and the Leopards converted 15 of 18 clears while the Hawks were 21 of 26.

THE SERIES

  • The two teams met for the 36th time Saturday, with Roger Williams now holding a 33-3 advantage in the series.

NEXT 

  • The Leopards return home Tuesday, April 19 for Senior Night, as Wentworth hosts CCC opponent Gordon College at 7:00 p.m.
