Men's Lacrosse Falls Short in CCC Tournament First Round Matchup With Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse's season came to a close Saturday, April 30, as the Leopards fell to Roger Williams University 11-8 in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Leopards got on the board early, as senior midfielder Erik Madden (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) scored just over a minute in to give Wentworth the lead. After a pair of Leopard shots missed the mark, Roger Williams acme back to tie it with five minutes gone in the first. Matt Halpin (Hanover, Mass.), who scored four times on the day, put in the tying goal for the Hawks. Wentworth had a chance to take the lead back, but a shot off the stick of junior midfielder Calvin McKenna (Lake Tapps, Wash.) was stopped by Roger Williams goalkeeper Max Kimmel (Milford, Conn.), who made nine saves on the day. Moments later, the home team jumped ahead with three goals in a span of 1:35 to take a 4-1 lead. Halpin got his second of the day, while Ryan Phillips (Hanover, Mass.) and Jared Grier (Quincy, Mass.) added one each for the Hawks. Following a Wentworth timeout, Roger Williams threatened again with two more shots, but senior goalkeeper Jack Munroe (Mansfield, Mass), who stopped six shots, turned the home team aside. The Leopards cut into the lead late in the quarter, as freshman attack Jared Hiller (North Andover, Mass.) scored with a little over two minutes left, coming off an assist by McKenna as Roger Williams held a 4-2 lead after one.
  • Both teams were stopped by saves from each goalkeeper in the opening minutes of the second quarter. After Wentworth couldn't convert on a man-up chance, they received another opportunity and were able to connect. Madden picked up the second of his five goals provided by another McKenna assist, bringing the visitors to within one. But the Hawks answered with two goals in the following two minutes, bringing it to a 6-3 score, including Grier's second of the day. The Leopards got multiple shots off over the next several minutes, but couldn't beat Kimmel as the score remained the same until late in the period. With two minutes left, Madden scored his third of the day to get Wentworth a little closer as they trailed by two going into halftime.
  • After a save by Munroe early in the third, the Leopards got another chance on the man-advantage with a chance to pull within one, but the Hawks were able to kill it off. Roger Williams then took control, scoring twice in 46 seconds as Grier and Halpin both put one in to give the home team an 8-4 advantage at the midway point of the third. Wentworth pushed to get back in it, as Hiller and senior attack Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) both put shots on goal, but were turned aside by Kimmel. The visitors were then able to cut their deficit to two, as Madden scored a pair of goal in just over two minutes. The senior's fifth goal with 1:19 remaining made it an 8-6 game going into the fourth.
  • After another shot by Prunier was stopped, two Hawks goals over a span of 1:11 gave Roger Williams a four-goal advantage once again. The home team continued to push the offense, as Halpin scored his fourth of the day to make it an 11-6 lead for the Hawks. After a save by Munroe, the Leopards were able to get one back as sophomore attack Drew Bouley (Gloucester, Mass.) found the back of the net with 3:26 remaining. Wentworth got the ball back and after Kimmel made another stop, Prunier was able to get one for the visitors as McKenna notched his third assist of the game. But the Leopards ran out of time, falling short by a score of 11-8 to Roger Williams.

 

NOTES

  • Wentworth had 33 shots to Roger Williams' 32, and the Leopards picked up 39 ground balls while the Hawks grabbed 36.
  • The Hawks were 13-of-22 in the faceoff circle and converted 19 of 25 clears while Wentworth went a perfect 20-for-20.

THE SERIES

  • The teams met for the 37th time Tuesday, with Roger Williams now holding a 34-3 lead in the series.
