WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman Brendan Kroll (Wakefield, R.I.) scored the game-winning tally with 1:43 left in the fourth overtime period, along with four other goals, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team (9-4) outlasted the Hartford Hawks (3-6) in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Today's contest marked the longest game in program history for the Leopards, surpassing multiple double overtime outings in recent history.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams swapped scores early in the opening frame before Hartford took a 2-1 edge at the 9:18 mark on a tally by sophomore Aidan Kemp (South Orange, N.J.). However, with a man-up, Wentworth knotted the score at two aside with eight seconds left in the quarter on a goal by Kroll.
  • The Leopards opened the quarter scoring three straight in a span of 6:38, with two off the stick of Kroll and another from senior Dryden Fisher (Haverhill, Mass.) to mark a 5-2 lead. The Hawks outscored the Leopards 2-1 across a 3:30 span to mark a 6-4 lead at the halfway mark.
  • The hosts opened the third quarter on a 3-0 run across a 4:18 span, including two goals by Kemp, to take a 7-6 edge by the 6:50 mark. The Black & Gold responded with a tally by sophomore Tyler Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) at the 3:17 mark, marking a 7-7 tie before the two teams traded goals to end the frame in an 8-8 knot.
  • The two teams swapped scores again across much of the fourth quarter, marking a 9-9 game by the 4:30 mark, before another score from Fisher just 17 seconds later gave Wentworth a 10-9 edge. However, junior Ryan Varano (Avon, Conn.) tied the game up once again with 1:14 to go.
  • The Leopards slung 12 shots towards the goal across the first three overtimes, with none proving successful, including one hitting the post. However, the Leopards broke through in the fourth extra frame on another quick strike by Kroll, lifting the Leopards to an 11-10 win.
  • Junior Tom Gardner (West Windsor, N.J.) made 12 stops in goal while senior Connor Charron (Tewksbury, Mass.) went 13-for-26 at the X with eight ground balls.
