BOSTON, Mass – A pair of first-half goals scored just under 11 minutes apart lifted the Gordon College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 4-5 (1-1).
At the 26:31 mark, Gordon took a 1-0 lead, thanks to a senior Blake Troiani (Dallas Texas) goal. Troiani scored after junior Ian Burkhart (Lancaster, Pa.) sent a cross in from the left side where Troiani connected on a header inside the left post. With 7:36 remaining in the half, the Fighting Scots took a 2-0 lead on a senior Josh Corcoran (Bellville, Ohio) goal. Corcoran's goal was scored on a header after junior Tyler Modzeleski (Cazenovia, N.Y.) served a corner kick into the box where Corcoran flicked the header inside the left post.
Wentworth nearly cut the lead in half with 37 seconds left in the opening frame. Senior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) headed a ball which appeared to be going in, however, freshman Wesley Sprague (Naperville, Ill.) made a diving stop going towards the left post to deny the bid.
The Leopards got on the board at the 71:44 mark on a freshman John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) goal. Basaca served a corner kick which was cleared out by a defender. Dauphin gained possession and fired home a shot to the upper left side. Wentworth had a chance off of a corner kick play in the 88th minute, however the shot was blocked and cleared away.
Sprague made six saves for Gordon while junior Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) turned aside eight shots. Wentworth had an 18-15 shot advantage while the Fighting Scots had a 5-3 corner kick edge.
The Leopards are at Springfield on Tuesday.
