SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A goal and two assists from junior Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) helped stake the 18th-ranked Springfield College men's soccer team to a 3-0 lead and the Pride never looked back, en route to a 6-2 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology Tuesday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win Springfield improves to 7-0 on the season while the Leopards fall to 4-6.
Schneider gave the hosts a 1-0 lead when he headed in a cross from junior Brad Deckel (Lansdale, Pa.) at 7:22. Schneider assisted on the next two Springfield goals as he sent a through ball to senior Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Conn.) at 16:55 and he and junior Nick Fontana (Marshfield, Mass.) assisted on junior Keon Haji's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) marker at 20:48.
Wentworth got on the board at 38:03 when senior Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.) scored from 30 yards out off of a pass from classmate Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.).
The Pride closed out the first half with a pair of goals 1:14 apart. Freshman Freddy Clark (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored from classmate Emmanuel Agyemang (East Hartford, Conn.) at 42:26 and Agyemang scored from sophomore Brendan Clafin (Burlington, Mass.) at 43:40.
Springfield upped its lead to 6-1 on an unassisted marker from junior Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.) at 53:38 before senior Stephen Frazier (Bedford, Mass.) brought Wentworth to within 6-2 with 17 seconds left in the contest.
Junior Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) didn't make a save in 45 minutes of work. Freshman Dylan Ruzbasan (Palatine, Ill.) made three saves in the second half. Junior Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) made a pair of first-half saves while classmate Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) had three saves in the second half. Springfield had a 21-10 shot advantage while corner kicks were even at 5-all.
Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Saturday.
