BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) factored in all three goals, scoring once and assisting on two others as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team picked up its second straight win with a 3-0 win over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Leopards even their record at 6-6-1 overall and are 2-1-1 in league play while the Nor'Easters fall to 2-11-0 (1-3-0).
Wentworth took control early, taking eight of the first nine shots in the contest with four coming on net. The Leopards continued to apply pressure and, at the 31:22 mark, got the only goal they would need coming on a senior Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.) shot from the top left of the box. Zendan picked up his fourth marker of the second after Basaca sent a pass from the right side to him.
UNE had a chance to tie the game in the 36th minute off of a free kick by junior Lee Esposito (Niskayuna, N.Y.), however, sophomore Phil Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.) tipped the ball over the crossbar.
To open the second half Wentworth put a pair of shots on net, but junior Nathan Delesdernier (Niantic, Conn.) kept it a one-goal game. In the 71st minute, sophomore Drew DeCoste (Somerset, Mass.) nearly made it 2-0, however, his one-timer went just left of the post.
Basaca gave the leopards a 2-0 lead at 76:04 when he took a pass from junior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) along the low right side and buried a shot from the top of the box. Three minutes and 31 seconds later Basaca sent a corner kick into the box where senior Matt Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) put a low shot inside the left post.
Sophomore Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.) made five saves to pick up his second shutout of the season. Delesdernier made 11 saves for the Nor'Easters. Wentworth had a 30-9 shot advantage while corner kicks were even at 4-all.
Both teams are in action on Tuesday as Wentworth is at Western New England and UNE is at Gordon.
