FARMINGTON, Maine – Sophomore Juan Cedeno (North Andover, Mass.) and junior Cameron Pacheco (Woburn, Mass.) scored second half goals 8:36 apart to lift the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to its first win of the season, 2-0, over the University of Maine Farmington.
For the second straight game, the first half was more of a defensive battle as the teams combined for just five shots with just one going on net. Wentworth, however, had three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of action.
The Leopards nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute as freshman Zach Ferchak (Freehold, N.J) had his shot attempt rattle off the crossbar and had a pair of subsequent shots, including one by junior Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) which was saved by senior Matthew Wilson (Hamden, Conn.).
Cedeno notched his first career marker, which would hold up as the game winner, as he took a feed from the right side from junior Casey McClay (Cincinnati, Ohio) and put a shot home to the left side. Twenty-five seconds later, Wentworth nearly took a 2-0 lead as senior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) intercepted a pass and went down the left side alone. His shot was saved by Wilson.
Pacheco added an insurance marker for the Black & Goal at the 78:03 mark. After a throw-in, he worked around a defender and created an opening where he nailed a 25-yard shot from the left, over the outstretched arms of Wilson, to the upper right corner of the net.
Senior Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) didn't need to make a save in recording his eighth career clean sheet. Wilson made three saves in the loss for Maine-Farmington. Wentworth had advantages in shots (10-4) and corner kicks (6-0).
Wentworth improves to 1-0-1 on the season and hosts 10th-ranked Amherst on Wednesday night. Maine-Farmington drops its season open and is back in action tomorrow when the Beavers host Becker.
