BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) put home the golden goal 3:36 into overtime as the Springfield College men's soccer team edged Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-1, in non-conference action Tuesday night.
In just the second minute of play, the Pride had a scoring chance when senior Brad Deckel's (Lansdale, Pa.) bid was saved by senior Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine). Just over three minutes later, Leopard senior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) headed an attempt from in front, however his shot sailed wide. Martins and junior Drew DeCoste (Somerset, Mass.) each put shots on frame 18 seconds apart, however, senior Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) came up with a pair of saves.
A foul led to a direct kick for the Black & Gold in the 29th minute. The kick was blocked by the Springfield wall and eventually the ball was cleared out of the zone. Freshman Jack Rosenberg (Simsbury, Conn.) gained possession of the ball and sent a feed to sophomore Emmanuel Agyemang (East Hartford, Conn.), who went down the right side and fired a shot to the lower left corner at 29:08.
Wentworth got the equalizer just 2:38 into the second half as Martins capitalized on a missed clearing attempt by the Pride and put his fourth marker of the year home to the top right corner.
Springfield kept applying pressure in hopes of getting the go-ahead goal, however, Sekerak made four saves in a nearly 17-minute span to keep the contest tied. In the 74th minute, Sekerak made another save off a freshman Jack Costa (Rocky Point, N.Y.) bid. The rebound came out to sophomore Xavier Gibson (Naugatuck, Conn.), who put his attempt over the crossbar.
Overtime saw Wentworth have a shot attempt blocked off the foot of junior Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) which led to a corner kick. However, the Leopards were unable to generate a chance off the kick.
Deckel set up Schneider for the game winner as he served a cross towards the box. Schneider headed the ball home to the lower left corner for his third tally of the year.
Frank made three saves for Springfield while Sekerak turned aside nine shots for Wentworth. The Pride had advantages in shots (21-14) and corner kicks (7-4).
Wentworth (5-4-1) is at Gordon on Saturday.
