BOSTON, Mass. – Three members of the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team have been honored by the Commonwealth Coast Conference as all-conference selections. The announcement was made after the CCC released its 2021 all-conference honorees and major award winners on Thursday morning.
Roger Williams' Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) was the winner of this season's offensive player of the year award, while Salve Regina's Casey Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) was selected as the defensive player of the year for the second time in his career. That was not the only award Kelly would take home, however, as he was also named the CCC Scholar-Athlete. Endicott's Joe Mepham (Sudbury, Mass.) was named the rookie of the year and his coach Joe Calabrese was voted the coach of the year. Gordon and the University of New England were both named team sportsmanship award winners.
Voting for the All-CCC Teams and major awards was conducted by the 10 CCC head men's soccer coaches following the conclusion of the regular season.
For the Leopards, senior forward Nathan Gosselin (Hudson, N.H.) and senior defender John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) were each named Second Team All-CCC while graduate student midfielder Ryan Firmin (Gorham, Maine) earned third team honors.
Gosselin is enjoying the finest offensive season of his career, as he leads the team in goals (nine) and points (19), having played in 11 contests (seven starts). Two of his goals have been game-winning goals and his nine goals are fifth among CCC student-athletes. He program records with four goals and eight points in a game when Wentworth defeated Lesley, 7-0, on September 14 and he is also 4-for-4 in penalty kicks, which presently leads the country in Division III. For his career he has started 37 of the 54 games he has played in, scoring 21 goals (three game winners) and assisting on four others for 46 points. He is tied for eighth all-time in program history in goals and is 10th in points scored.
After being honored as a third team selection two seasons ago, Dauphin earns second team accolades this season for his solid, two-way play. In 16 games (16 starts), he has a team-leading 11 assists to go along with three goals for 17 points. He had a career-high five points in a 3-2 win at MIT when he scored a career-best two goals and assisted on the game-winning tally. His 11 assists, many of which have come off set pieces, are tops among CCC student-athletes and seventh in Division III and also ties him for second on Wentworth's single-season list. In 64 career games (58 career starts), Dauphin has scored 33 points, coming on five goals and 23 assists. He is presently first in program history in assists per game (0.36) and third in assists, one behind Wentworth's all-time leaders.
Firmin repeats as an All-CCC selection, having been named to the first team in 2019. Starting all 15 games in which he has played in this season, he often may not appear in the stat sheet but he has made his presence known on the field all season long, primarily from a defensive midfield role and has been the Leopards' most consistent player. Often tasked with marking the opposing team's most dangerous player, he is constantly breaking up opponent attacks and keeps everyone involved by connecting passes all over the field to start the Wentworth attack. In 67 career games (60 starts), he has logged three points on a goal and an assist.
The Leopards finished the regular season with a 9-9 record and finished seventh in CCC play with a 4-5 mark. Wentworth will host eighth-seeded Suffolk tonight in the CCC Opening Round Game at 7:00 p.m.
