Men's Soccer Battles Coast Guard in Home Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – The United States Coast Guard Academy scored a goal in each half to spoil the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team's home opener as the Bears beat the Leopards, 2-0, Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Coast Guard had its first chance of the afternoon in the fifth minute when junior Charles Fish (Little Silver, N.J.) took a shot that was blocked and resulted in a corner kick. However, nothing materialized from the set piece.
  • At the 10:21 mark, Fish helped the Bears get on the board when he served a free kick from the top left of the box to the right side. Senior Noah Engstrom (Brea, Calif.) got a head on the service and put a shot home inside the right post.
  • Senior TJ Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) had a pair of shot attempts for Wentworth in the 27th and 30th minutes, however, junior Max Pfleghar (Fairfield, Conn.) made saves on both attempts.
  • Coast Guard mounted pressure in the second half, using a 7-1 shot advantage to their favor. However, senior Louis Quintero (Boston, Mass.) made three saves to keep the game at 1-0. In the 89th minute, Fish took a loose ball and fired a shot from the top of the box that beat Quintero and have the Bears a 2-0 advantage.
  • Quintero finished with six saves, while Pfleghar had two. Coast Guard had a 15-6 shot advantage and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

THE SERIES:

  • This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
