WPI Sneaks Past Men's Soccer

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Luke Savoie (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Aaron Vaz (Medford, Mass.) each scored goals and senior Roe Hendrick (Nashua, N.H.) made a pair of saves as the WPI men's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-0, in non-conference play Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A WPI corner kick in the sixth minutes nearly put the hosts on the board, however, the shot off the kick went wide of the mark. Savoie put a shot on net in the ninth minute that was saved by freshman Giovanni Ruggieri (Canton, Mass.)
  • Savoie put the Engineers ahead at the 12:19 mark when headed a cross from freshman Aidan McLoughlin (Colchester, Vt.) into the corner of the net.
  • Shortly after WPI took the lead, the Leopards nearly tied it, however, senior TJ Prouty's shot off a corner kick was saved by Hendrick.
  • Ruggieri singlehandedly kept it a one-goal game as he made four saves in a span of 2:17, including three in a span of 46 seconds.
  • In the 86th minute, sophomore Raphael Ribeiro (Medford, Mass.) put a shot on net, however, Hendrick came up with the save to keep the Engineers on top.
  • With 23 seconds left, a foul occurred in the box. Waz stepped up to the spot and made it 2-0 with a penalty-kick marker.
  • Ruggieri made a career-best eight saves. WPI had a 23-7 shot advantage and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

THE SERIES:

  • Tonight was the 19th all-time meeting between the two teams. WPI has won the last four and leads, 11-7-1.
