BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of goals from junior John McCarthy (Hampstead, N.Y.), including the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute, lifted the Roger Williams University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Roger Williams had an early chance off a corner kick, however, the shot attempt was blocked and Wentworth eventually gained possession. The Hawks put a shot on goal in the 19th minute, which senior Louis Quintero (Boston, Mass.) made a save on.
  • McCarthy gave Roger Williams a 1-0 lead at the 19:19 mark when he scored from junior Justin Horvath (Stratford, Conn.) Horvath served a ball from the far side of the box that Quintero came out to deflect but McCarthy gained possession and put the shot home.
  • Senior Augustin Edwin, Jr., had Wentworth's first shot on target, a shot that was saved by junior Jack Avellar (Orleans, Mass.). On the counter attack, Quintero made a save off a senior Javi Beltran (Madrid, Spain) shot.
  • Beltran nearly made it 2-0 when he was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. However, Quintero read the kick perfectly, coming up with a diving stop to keep it a one-goal game with just over four minutes left in the frame.
  • The Leopards appeared to have tied the game with 2:47 left in the half, however, an offsides call on the play took the goal off the board.
  • Sophomore Christopher Jimenez (Doral, Fla.) tied the game at 1-all with his first career goal, coming at 47:54. Senior TJ Prouty came up with the ball and fed a pass to sophomore Nick Lenz (Danbury, Conn.) who flicked the ball to Jimenez. Jimenez beat Avellar to the right side for the game-tying marker.
  • After Wentworth was whistled for being offside, Roger Williams carried possession, and, off a long throw-in, junior CJ Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) found McCarthy, who beat Quintero to the left corner at the 50:26 mark, making it 2-1.
  • The Leopards' best chance to tie the game came off a header from Prouty in the 74th minute, however, Avellar made the stop.
  • Quintero made seven saves for the Black & Gold. Roger Williams had a 17-8 shot advantage and an 8-4 edge on corner kicks.

THE SERIES:

  • Today was the 42nd all-time meeting between the two teams. Roger Williams has won the last three meetings and leads the all-time series 22-16-4.
